Traditionally, low-fat diets have been promoted as the healthiest way to eat.
However, recent research shows us that this is not the case. In fact, low-fat diets can be detrimental to your health, leading to weight gain, nutrient deficiencies, and other health problems.
Healthy Fats Are Your Friend
Contrary to popular belief, fat is not bad for you. In fact, it’s an essential nutrient that plays a vital role in energy production, brain health and hormone function.
However, the modern diet has deviated drastically from this blueprint as it’s high in processed carbohydrates and low in healthy fats.
This diet has shifted our metabolism towards relying on glucose as the primary energy source, and this change has had notable consequences. It’s given rise to issues like insulin resistance, metabolic imbalance, and an increased risk of chronic diseases, obesity and diabetes.
A nutrient-rich diet that emphasizes healthy fats is essential for boosting your energy and mental performance.
Some good sources of these healthy fats include:
Grass-fed beef
Wild-caught fish
Pasture-raised eggs
Avocados
Olive oil
This approach to eating emphasizes healthy fats and a balanced diet. Which is more aligned with our human physiology (we’re classified as carnivores who have adapted to include plants in our diet), and it has been shown to be beneficial for overall health and well-being.
Complete absence of carbohydrates is not necessary, but it should come from healthy whole sources, like fruits and vegetables, limiting processed carbohydrates to when the body needs extra energy for physical activity.
Master The Ratio
Consider the ratio of macronutrients on your plate. Macronutrients are the 3 main types of nutrients your body needs: fat, protein and carbohydrates.
When you eat a meal that’s high in processed carbohydrates, your blood sugar levels spike quickly and then crash, just as quickly. This can lead to fatigue, hunger and cravings.
On the other hand, when you eat a meal high in healthy fats and protein, your blood sugar levels rise more slowly and remain stable for longer. This gives you sustained energy and helps prevent cravings.
When you’re aiming to boost your energy and mental performance, it’s important to pay attention to the macronutrient ratio on your plate.
Aim to have a balance of healthy fats, protein and complex carbohydrates at each meal. Some general ratios you can use for guidance are:
If you’re being physically active:
1/2 plate non-starchy veggies
1/4 plate protein and fat
1/4 plate of starchy vegetable
If you’re sitting at a desk all day:
1/2 plate non-starchy vegetable
1/2 plate protein and fat
Rules Of Thumb For Boosting Your Energy & Mental Performance
Prioritize healthy meats, fats and organs from sources like grass-fed animals, wild-caught fish and pasture-raised eggs.
Limit processed carbohydrates.
Eat plenty of organic vegetables and integrate fruits when you’re active.
Drink plenty of water. Actual water, not flavored water or juices.
Get enough sleep. Your body needs sleep to properly digest and rest.
Notice the ratio on your plate. Aim to have a balance of healthy fats, protein and complex carbohydrates at each meal.
