3 Steps To Replace Your Income Through Coaching In 6-12 Months

I failed at starting a coaching business

It was 2017, and I had big dreams of leaving my stable 6-figure career to become a coach. I was bored, tired and, frankly, burning out.

I finally mustered up the courage to announce my new business on social media. Over the next couple of months, all of my “marketing” efforts resulted in exactly ONE client.

She paid me something like $100/m to coach her. A far cry from the $8,000-$10,000/m I needed to maintain my accustomed level of earning. 

Within 60 days, I quietly stopped posting about my coaching and went back to focusing on my marketing career.

I was so embarrassed.

A year later, I decided to go for it again. But this time, I approached things differently.

I worked with multiple coaches, and within 8 months, I replaced my 6-figure earnings through coaching and quit my “day job.” 

Within 2 years, I was making multiple 6-figures. And within 3 years, I’d hit the $500K mark.

And I learned over time that there’s a process I wish I had known to follow from the start. This process can help you become a full-time coach too.

This is the exact process I followed to go from $0 to replace my job with coaching in less than 12 months:

STEP 1: CRAFT YOUR ROADMAP

Most people start with their big vision. Which is crucial to creating the energy and inspiration for making your coaching dreams a reality.

But once you have your vision, you need a roadmap. 

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to know every single step to get from Point A, to your ultimate vision (Point Z). All you need to know at this moment is how to get to the place where you can quit your day job and focus on coaching full-time (Point B).

This starts with your “magic number.”

Your magic number is the amount of money you need to cover your basic expenses. This is NOT to be confused with your “dream number,” which is how much you’d love to make. You will get there eventually. But if you set your sights too high from the beginning, it will be easy to get discouraged.

So, what is your monthly minimum to cover your bases, without feeling stressed? Write that number down.

STEP 2: CREATE YOUR OFFER

Ideally, you want to create a coaching offer that can get you to your “magic number” by enrolling just 1-2 clients a month.

My magic number when I started was $8000/m. So I drew on my 6 years of experience building a successful marketing business and designed a 5-month business coaching program.

The investment was $5,000 — so I needed two monthly clients to make my magic number.

I did NOT spend weeks or months developing the program. That’s a huge mistake many new coaches make.

(At worst, they invest tons of time and/or money into program development to find out later that no one wants to buy what they’ve created. At best, they get stuck in planning mode for far longer than they need to, which delays their timeline for making enough money to quit their day job.)

My coaches taught me that bringing an offer to market FAST was essential. 

So I got clear on the outcome I wanted to help my clients achieve, made an outline of what I would coach them around to help them get there, and then started reaching out to people and making invitations.

STEP 3: MAKE INVITATIONS

I called my approach to sales “The Art Of The Invitation” because that’s what authentic selling is all about. Making invitations to the right people, without attachment to whether they say yes or no.

Don’t get me wrong, I spent months learning and practicing authentic selling techniques before I landed on an approach that worked for me. 

During this trial and error period, I got a lot of nos. 

I knew I’d finally cracked the code when I enrolled seven out of seven people in a row into my program — a record $35,000 in a matter of weeks.

Whether you use my approach or someone else’s, the key is to start making invitations as soon as possible…  

• You don’t need a website. 

• You don’t need beautiful branding. 

• You don’t need to post every day on social media.

All you need is 1-2 clients per month, and “marketing” becomes incredibly simple. 

It’s all about having more authentic conversations that lead to paying customers.
